name: Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr
birth: October 20, 1971
Better known professionally as Snoop Dogg and previously Snoop Doggy Dogg, is an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Snoop is best known as an MC in the West Coast hip hop scene, and for being one of producer Dr. Dre’s most notable protégés. His catch phrase is "-izzle." That style of slang was invented by Frankie Smith and The Gap Band in the early eighties, and popularized in part by fellow rapper E-40.
His mother nicknamed him "Snoopy" as a child because of the way he dressed and because of his love of the cartoon Peanuts; he took the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg when he began recording. He changed his name to Snoop Dogg in 1998, when he left his original record label Death Row Records and signed with No Limit Records.

In hip hop music, people individually and separately vocalize over beats, instrumental tracks, usually consisting of repeated phrases. Hip-hop is considered an important development in the history of music because, for the first time, non-tonal aspects of speech, its emphasis and lyricism, are the most identifiable aspects of vocalizations. Also, syncopation and abstract rhythms are being used in ways never before. In addition, technological manipulation of sound is being used as never before. Hip-hop began as an idea during the 1970s, became a mainstream genre during the 1980s, and an internationally popular genre during the 1990s and 2000s. It is usually divided into three periods: Roots, Old School, and Golden Age. Most agree that the "golden age" ended during the 1990s. The current period is not yet named, though it is commonly referred to as New school hip hop, or sometimes even the "Hip hop is dead" era. The following is an objective look at how hip hop has developed.
Hip-Hop Defined:
Hip-hop is a form of popular music that’s comprised mainly of mc’ing (rapping) and dj’ing. The other two components that complete the four elements of hip-hop are graffiti and breakdancing. As hip-hop evolved into big business, the four elements (mc’ing, dj’ing, graffiti, and breakdancing) are constantly being merged with others like clothing, language, and mind set in general.
Hip-Hop Vs. Rap:
Rap is the form of music that stemmed from the hip-hop culture. Hip hop is a lifestyle with its own lingo, dress code, etc. In the words of KRS-One, “hip-hop is something you live, rap is something you do.”
Hip-Hop Started in the Bronx:
A product of cross-cultural integration, rap is deeply rooted within ancient African culture and oral tradition. Hip-hop is believed to have originated in the Bronx by a Jamaican DJ named Kool Herc. Herc’s style of dj’ing involved reciting rhymes over instrumentals. At house parties, Herc would rap with the microphone, using a myriad of in-house references. Documented duplicates of Herc’s house parties soon drifted through Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc spreading hip-hop and spawning new artists.
The First Rap/Hip-hop Songs:
The first rap recordings were “King Tim III (Personality Jock)" by Fatback Band and “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang. The latter reached the #36 spot on the Billboard charts (a huge feat by 1970’s standards), demonstrating the ability of hip-hop to draw commercial appeal.
Hip-hop As a Melting Pot:
Hip-hop as a musical melting pot is still evolving. It has become more eclectic, borrowing from soul, jazz and live instrumentations with the likes of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and most recently Kanye West championing the ‘soulful rap’ movement.
